The Importance of SPF and how it will benefit your skin

Updated: May 19, 2022

Why must we wear SPF all year round?! UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin's thickest layer. Unprotected exposure can lead to premature skin aging and wrinkling (photoaging), and suppression of the immune system. UVB rays will usually burn the superficial layers of your skin. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer. When choosing an SPF, ensure that it is broad spectrum which means you are fighting the UVA and UVB ray as most spf on the market tend to only fight UVB and we need a minimum of spf 30 for it to be effective. UVA ray can penetrate through clouds and windows which means we are exposed to UV ray all the time, why fix a concern on the skins when we are not protecting from further damage?

I would probably say 80% of my clients who i do skin consultations with do not wear an SPF, and I would say 10% of the remaining either do not wear broad spectrum SPF or use and SPF below 30 or in there 'creams and foundations' which do not give you the coverage needed for protection.

It is very interesting how people do not know the importance of an SPF! Many of my clients excuses tend to be 1. Why do they need to wear an SPF when it isn't sunny and 2. They do not want to wear an SPF because they feel it is like the creams that they use when they go on holiday. As a practitioner, we cannot help the skin if you are not protecting your skin from any further damage.

The UVB rays is what turns our skin brown, where as the UVA ray is the harming ray which makes us age. This ray is present all your round even on the coldest of days and can even get us through windows! And as importantly, most SPF's in creams, moisturizers, foundations, not only do not give you full protection but do not have the right ingredients in to protect your skin against UVA rays.

Reasons why it is important for us to have a good SPF in our skin care routine;

Protections against environmental damage

Protection against UVA and UVB rays

We cannot fix a skin if it not protected from any further damage

Protects the skin from ageing

Protection against skin cancer

If you have a close look at an ageing skin, 70% of the time it is not the lines and wrinkles which is causing people to look aged. It is the un even skin tones and textures which have been caused by unprotected skin and pigment damage over the years. UV rays also increase the break down of collage and dry out the skin.

Do you see sun damage on your skin? Sun spots on your skin occure due to pigment damage under neath the skin. If sun damage is not protected against any further damage and prevented then over the years that sun spot will only get worse.

Looking at this lady. Half her face ( the darker side) has brilliant broad spectrum SPF on the skin. Under the skin scanner you can see that it is creating almost like a shield effect on the skin. This is protecting the skin from any further damage as well as keeping away the free radicals and environmental damage. The other half of her face (the lighter side) does not have any SPF on. The picture quality isnt amazing but it shows that the client has areas of concern such as pigmentation and dehydration from pro longed exposure to UV rays.
